The furry fandom

The furry fandom, which emerged in the 1980s, brings together an international community of enthusiasts who appreciate anthropomorphic characters, beings that blend human and animal traits. Today, furries (or furs) are estimated to number between 1 and 5 million worldwide, a growth supported by online communities and the mainstream rise of creative and geek culture.

Like any other fandom, it is first and foremost a hobby, comparable to being a Trekkie, a science‑fiction fan, an anime enthusiast, or a tabletop role‑player. Each person participates in their own way, according to their interests, level of involvement, and creativity.

Fursuits, costumes representing anthropomorphic characters, have become one of the most visible symbols of the movement. However, only a minority of furries own one. The furry expression extends far beyond costuming and includes art, illustration, literature, comics, role‑playing, and the creation of original characters known as fursonas.

Despite persistent stereotypes, the furry fandom is a warm, inclusive, and imaginative community. It values personal expression, creativity, and respect. For many, it is a space to be themselves, explore identity, or simply share an artistic hobby with other passionate individuals.
